    Description

This is "new" very "old stock".  We purchased a huge lot (literally thousands) of photo postcards from an estate of a man who bought out a former early "General Store" DECADES ago.  These were for sale in that store way back in the early years of the 20th century (1900's).   Very interesting to us and, hopefully, to others as well - I will keep listing these until I'm no longer on Ebay.  Lots of history.  This group represent a few we picked at random related to totems in Alaska. Remember that these were photographed about 1915.  You get all 8 cards - multiples (number in parentheses) of each, except for one .  At the top left is Famous Chief Shakes Totem in Wrangell (2). Upper row middle is Chief Johnson's Totem & residence in Ketchikan (4).  Upper row right is Thlinget Chief Kian's Totem in Ketchikan (1 - very few of this).    Second row left is Shake's Grave Totems (4). Second row middle is The Raven Flood Totem in Ketchikan (4). Second row right is the Kicksetti Totem and sun house in Wrangell (2).  Third row left postcard is Totem Poles Alert Bay, Vancouver B.C. (2). Postcard on the bottom is the Memorial Totem in Sitka (2).   For a TOTAL OF 21 CARDS.  These are remarkably clean and in good condition.  I wonder if any of these totems are in a museum.   I understand most totems were carved out of cedar which can "weather" better, also that the most important figure was the one usually at eye level.  None of the postcards were ever mailed.  All have the divided back.   Thanks for looking at my auction.
