    Description

    T
he City and Borough of Juneau, is the capital city of the State of Alaska, located on the Gastineau channel and the Alaskan panhandle.  It was named the capital of Alaska in 1906.  Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of 3,576-foot, Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island.  It is unique among the 49 U.S. capitals on the mainland North America in that there are no roads connecting the city to the rest of the state nor North America.
    T
he first European to see the Juneau area was Joseph Whidbey, master of the Discovery during George Vancouver’s 1791-95 expedition.  In 1880, mining engineer George Pilz sent Joe Juneau and Richard Harris to explore the Gastineau Channel, directing them to Snow Slide Gulch (head of Gold Creek) where they found Gold.  They marked a 160-acre town site where soon a mining camp sprang up.  It was the first European American settlement founded in this territory.  By the autumn of 1881, the village had a population of over 100 and was known as “Rockwell”, then later “Harris”.  The miners changed the name to Juneau after another prospector Joe Juneau.  The population was 1,864 in 1900 and 1,644 in 1910 then grew to 3,058 in 1920 and was estimated in 2019 at 31,276.

loyd Valentine Winter (1866-1945) and Edwin Percy Pond (1872-1843), of the firm Winter & Pond were prominent Alaskan photographers.  In 1893, Winter came to Juneau from San Francisco and opened a studio.  In 1894, his friend, E.P. Pond joined him.  They operated their photography studio for over 50 years until Pond’s death at the age of 71 in 1943.  In 1945, Winter turned the business over to Francis Harrison, who maintained the Winter & Pond Co. until 1956.
